History of Olbia Airport

In 1921, a military airstrip was established at Olbia, then Terranova Pausania. In 1927, a seaplane station was established adjacent to the harbor on Isola Bianca. However, with low island passenger loads on the flights to Ostia and Cagliari, the stop in Terranova was discontinued in 1929. During World War II, the Allies bombed the airfield and seaplane base. The Germans established a second airstrip 4.5 miles west of the town, which they later renamed Olbia.

Commercial flights started to resume in earnest in 1963, and Alisarda, an airline based in Olbia, was established. In 1972, it successfully added jet planes to its route network, and in 1991, it changed its name to Meridiana. However, the development of a larger airport was required, and the current airport was finished in 1974.

After three years of construction, a new terminal capable of accommodating 4.5 million people annually and measuring 42,000 square meters was unveiled on June 6, 2004. The new structure features ten boarding gates, five of which have jet bridges and 40 check-in desks. It has several different stores and eateries, a wine bar, a little art gallery, and indoor gardens with regional plants.

The airport was closed to passenger aviation traffic from February 3 to March 14, 2020, as the runway and taxiways underwent renovations until it reopened.
